about

They Took My Wife From Me Last Night (trad.)

First published in Patrick MacDonald’s 1784 Collection of Highland Vocal Airs under the name Ghoid iad mo bhean uam an rèir (They Stole My Wife from Me Last Night) and noted as a North Highland tune. The title gives the performer room for interpretation. Aonghas Grant writes in his 2010 Glengarry Collection “You don’t know if he was sad when they stole his wife, or if he threw a party.” Aonghas preferred the party version, but we’ve decided he was sad to see her go.
