about

The Sound of Sleat: Wee Michael's March (John McCusker, PRS/MCPS)/Lord MacDonald’s (trad.)/The Sound of Sleat (trad.)

The MSR (march, strathspey, reel) is a traditional set played in pipe bands, and this is our very loose take on the format. The march is a jaunty tune, mostly in 3/4, originally written for the fiddle. Lord MacDonald’s first printing was in the The Athole Collection of Scottish Dance Music by James Stewart Robertson, 1884. The Sound of Sleat is the narrow channel separating the southeastern end of the Isle of Skye from the Scottish mainland. Michael first learned this tune from Pipe Major Jim Clough some twenty years ago and it takes on a new life in this setting, reflecting the coastline of western Scotland.
