Dusty Miller: O'Neill's March/The Dusty Miller (all trad.)

On his 1969 recording ‘O Riada sa Gaiety’ Sean O Riada pairs two marches titled O’Neill’s March and O’Neill’s Cavalcade (the second being the tune heard here) under the heading O’Neill’s Cavalry March. The somewhat confusing result was that both tunes are now often referred to simply as ‘O’Neill’s March’. This tune is a close relation of the slide Barrack Hill and the Scottish Haughs of Cromdale. Our version is inspired by Paddy Keenan’s 1983 ‘Poirt An Phíobaire’ album. The Dusty Miller is a dangerous hop jig… once you start it, it takes a great deal of sheer will and self control to stop.
